Too Complex To Learn??? Too complex to change maybe!

Regarding the statement below that (POST) indicated up to 80% of  turnover within the first year is due to a lack of knowledge, skill, or ability the newly-hired employee needs to perform the job - and the work is increasingly complex - it follows that agencies have no choice but to meet the training demands for those hired.

This may require some changes to the traditional ways of training.  Agencies certainly cannot say the work is now just too complex to learn!

Great instructors make complex learning simpler through effective teaching methods (adult learning, consistency, professionalism, mentoring) and training tools (simulation, modeling, role play, critical thinking sessions, effective evaluations).  In addition we can now identify the tools of the trade (empathy, visualization, voice) and pass them on to the learners purposefully thereby increasing their understanding of the ways of the work.

What is needed to make these changes?  Mostly time and a recognition that change is needed. Just some ideas to discuss.  :)

A 1990 report by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) indicated that up to 80% of turnover within the first year is due to a lack of knowledge, skill, or ability the newly-hired employee needs to perform the job. I am certain that this has become more of an issue as the job has become more complex.
