When a new employee is in the training process, he/she uses a training simulator called the 911-Starz Simulator. This system allows the trainee to receive 911 calls and dispatch calls before actually handling an actual call from the public.
The DawsonCounty Sheriff’s Office Communication Division is responsible for receiving and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency requests for service. Our center is not only responsible for dispatching law enforcement but also dispatches for DawsonCountyEmergency Services. The center is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The center employs 12 certified Communications Officers that work 12 hour shifts, which include four officers serving as shift supervisors.
Each Communications Officer receives 40 hours of dispatch training, as well as Emergency Medical Dispatch, and CPR/AED training. Each operator also holds certifications allowing them to access the Georgia Crime Information Computer. The center also offers supplemental training such as the 911-Starz Simulator, which creates real life situations in which the trainee has to react and respond. As well as the LETN (Law Enforcement Television Network) where the trainee views a short training film, and is administered a test. The officer receives P.O.S.T. credit for the LETN training.
